Queenstown Public House

Flowers, fries, burgers, and brews.

Queenstown Public House is the perfect place if you're looking for a relaxing lunch with friends on a beautiful summer day. Its quaint ambiance is inviting, with shaded outdoor seating and decorated with sunflowers, lacy table tops, and pops of lime green and pastels. Inside, high top counters and a bar are paired with sparkly glass adornments and a wall of liquor, making for a fun and classy night time hot spot.

Aside from the look of the place, the food was unique and very good. And to my surprise, they had a gluten free menu! They even keep the vegan and vegetarian options noted.

To start off, we ordered a peach and basil sangria, and sweet potato fries that came in a little tin bucket, stocked with spicy mayo. (Trust me on this one, don't pass up the sangria). I then ordered the TJ Burger: a black bean vegetarian/gluten free patty on a gluten free bun, topped with tortilla chips, pureed tomatoes, jalapeƱos, blue cheese crumbles, hot sauce, and in addition, avocado. It was quite a burger; filling, full of interesting flavor combinations, and somewhat healthy? Or so I'd like to think. Aside from a full menu of different style burgers, they also have delicious salads, such as heirloom tomato with burrata cheese, a giant fruit combination topped with grilled shrimp, and red and black quinoa with pear and veggies.

Along with the great food, Queenstown Public House had fantastic service. Our waitress was very sweet, interested in giving us detailed explanations on whatever recipe we questioned, and quick to pull out another menu option when she heard the words "gluten free."

So, head over to Queenstown Public House and end your summer with a fun, low key night.

The Mission

The Mission is a local breakfast place in North Park, San Diego with a gluten free friendly, Latin infused menu. The first time I went, I ordered a scrambled egg and chorizo dish that came with salty, crispy potatoes, and rosemary gluten free toast. My sister had the chilaquiles, and my mom the papas loco, another scramble that consisted of potatoes and other combinations of ingredients that ended up surpassing expectations.

After that happy morning, I told my sister we had to go back just so I could try the gluten free french toast. I ended up ordering an iced coffee as well, by the name of "mocha thai". If you're a coffee lover, and you have absolutely zero guilt when it comes to the consumption of condensed milk, then the mocha thai is definitely for you. Of course, they topped it with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. It's all about the presentation.

The gluten free french toast was simply delightful. It was made with their thick cinnamon swirl bread and topped with berries, powdered sugar, and placed on a plate decorated with berry compote. Aside from the cute, artistic presentation, the food tastes just as good as it looks. Now, I'm usually not one to turn away maple syrup when it comes to waffles, pancakes, or french toast; but in all honesty, the cinnamon bread itself was so good and sweet, it didn't need syrup. Now THAT'S french toast.

Adventures in LA

Summer in LA consisted of sunshine, a daily work grind, and of course, food.

One of the most well known hot spots of LA I knew I had to make a trip to was Urth Caffe. (Obviously). From their organic taco salads and sandwiches, to their iced Spanish lattes and juices, Urth pretty much caters to anybody. Women in hats and sunglasses, coworkers in button ups and ties, and couples with their dogs sit out on the Urth patio to take a quick breather on a busy LA day. It's a pretty great place to people watch along Melrose.

Another foodie discovery I made was a cute little market style restaurant, painted in bright white and trimmings of lime green, called Lemonade. This LA fave is dog friendly, organic and health conscious, but fully stocked with an array of desserts including vibrant and pretty macaroons, gluten free peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies, and slices of cake. It's quick, affordable, and they allow you to sample several recipes until you find the ones you love most. One of my favorite dishes was the crisp and tasty Mexican butternut squash salad. It had chili, Latin seasonings, cilantro, and salty, crunchy corn nuts that added a delicious flavor and texture to the dish. I also tried their salmon stuffed avocado, fennel and grilled brussel sprout salad, beautiful fascia beet salad, and the white and green bean caprese inspired salad. Everything I ate, was undeniable and required a second lunch date trip.

Luckily, while I was working, I didn't have to make my way through Beverly or Melrose to find lunch because we were provided with Off the Shelf Catering. Thank goodness, Off the Shelf Catering was at our beck and call every morning starting at 8am. They had tables set up with beautiful fruit arrangements, compiled of watermelon, pineapple, grapes, strawberries, and cantaloupe. Freshly made donuts, yogurts and cereals, bacon and potatoes, and fresh, personalized scrambles were all included. Around lunch time, they had even more of a variety of dishes. Latin inspired rice and beans, kale salads, sliders, barbecue chicken, potato salads, and their dangerously delectable and addicting chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting were all part of the deal. (If you have a peanut butter addiction like me, then the cupcakes are to die for).

The last place I absolutely fell in love with, was a local breakfast place called Millie's Cafe. Millie's had everything from vegetarian options, not so vegetarian options, and sweet and yummy options, and gluten free options. Millie's is typically very busy, but once again, pet friendly. Right outside in front of the waiting area (aka the sidewalk) a giant dispenser is filled to the brim with fruit and mint infused ice water. The first morning I went, I ordered the half stack of gluten free, walnut and chocolate chip pancakes, with a side of freshly sliced strawberries and bananas. Boy, was it gorgeous and beyond delicious. For those of you who are gluten free, I highly recommend this place. The pancakes are fluffy and huge, and you could easily confuse them for regular pancakes. The second time I went, I ordered the Devil's Mess, a gigantic scramble with turkey sausage, topped with guacamole, tomatoes and onions, and of course with a side of breakfast potatoes. Talk about the devil, this scramble was so decadent but so delicious, you would be surprised that it is a breakfast item. You could have that entree for dinner and it would fill you up as if it were a double cheese burger. Salty, savory, greasy...everything good and bad you would want in a breakfast dish. They had other dishes on the menu including a variety of pancakes such as sweet potato, egg white omelets, benedicts, scrambles, and a combination of everything your eyes desire. Millie's, is a must try.

The city of LA may have stolen my heart, but the food kept it full and happy.

Donut Bar San Diego

Donut Bar San Diego, a cute little donut and waffle iron filled to the brim with delectible desserts and donuts. The beautifully decorated pastries are picture perfect and sure to improve the look of your Instagram feed with the proper placement; no need for filter here.

Each donut is quirky in it's own way. Some decorated in child-like characters and faces, others dressed in pretty pastels and sprinkles, and the rest painted with unique designs, creating works of art.

They do in fact, taste as good as they look, and come in a variety of never before seen flavors and shapes. From "Starbucks Espresso" and "Nutella", to "Birthday Cake" and "Red Velvet" you have an array of options, making your choices that much harder. They even have the classics, including sugar, vanilla, and maple bacon. You will never be bored with options because every evening, the menu is recreated for a fresh, new look, filled with flavors; different from the morning before.

Feel free to taste a little bite of each, and find your favorite. But don't forget, every day between 11am and 12pm, they post their famous "Sold Out :)" menu photo to their Instagram. So, plan an early morning around your Donut Bar trip. It's worth waking up to the sunrise for.
